Baxter Healthcare Corp. recently recalled its Abacus software for ordering compounded liquid medications due to a risk the printed bag labels may contain incorrect information, the Food and Drug Administration announced. FDA has identified this as a Class 1 recall, noting that incorrect values or patient names on printed bag labels for compounded medications may cause serious harm, especially if the wrong amounts or wrong medications are administered to high-risk patients. Five complaints but no injuries have been reported. The company last month recommended customers take certain actions to address the issue until it upgrades the software.
